In a renewed effort to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Oyo State, Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria (TBI), with support from UNICEF Nigeria, has trained key justice sector actors in Olorunsogo Local Government Area to enhance the enforcement of anti-FGM laws and protect survivors.
The capacity strengthening workshop, held in Igbeti, brought together from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Immigration Service, Amotekun Corps, Park Rangers, Federal Road Safety Corps, magistrates, legal aid providers, and gender desk officers.
The training sessions focused on strengthening understanding of FGM-related legislation, proper evidence handling, and ensuring survivor-centered approaches in prosecution and justice delivery.
Speaking at the opening session, Executive Director of Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria, Dr. Dare Olagoke-Adaramoye, stressed that effective coordination among justice institutions remains vital to ending FGM in the state.
“Strengthening collaboration within the justice sector is crucial to ensure that FGM cases are not only reported but diligently prosecuted, with survivors treated with dignity and care,” he said.
Senior Registrar, Magistrate Court Igbeti, Onifade Oluseye assured of speedy handling of FGM-related cases, while law enforcement officers pledged closer collaboration for investigation, prosecution, and community sensitisation.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional council in Igbeti, Prince Abioye Mudasheer commended the organisers for the initiative and pledged continued cooperation with security agencies and the judiciary to stamp out the harmful practice from the community.
The initiative, according to TBI, forms part of ongoing efforts by UNICEF to build a coordinated justice system response capable of protecting women and girls and eliminating all forms of gender-based violence in Oyo State.
