TODAY’S VIEWPOINT FOCUSES ON THE DANGERS OF USING MOBILE PHONES NEAR COOKING GAS. IT IS WRITTEN BY EMMANUEL DADA, A YOUTH CORPS MEMBER IN THE NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT.
The increasing reliance on mobile phones, even in kitchens, particularly where cooking gas is present, raises significant safety concerns.
In recent years, mobile phones have become an inseparable part of our daily lives.
Whether browsing the internet, making calls, or sending messages, many people keep their phones with them constantly, even in the kitchen.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) also known as cooking gas is commonly used in households worldwide.
This convenient and efficient energy source allows for meal preparation, but it also comes with inherent risks.
LPG consists primarily of propane and butane and a minor leak in an enclosed space like such as kitchens can create a highly combustible environment.
In such conditions, a single spark can ignite the gas, leading to an explosion.
While mobile phones are not typically associated with causing fires, they can pose a hazard in specific situations.
Most mobile devices are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which are prone to overheating or short-circuiting under certain conditions.
When used in high-heat environments like kitchens, the risk of battery malfunction increases and a malfunctioning battery can release sparks.
Sadly, if there is a small gas leak, it can trigger an explosion.
Although the likelihood of a mobile phone igniting gas fumes is low, however, the possibility cannot be entirely dismissed.
Some studies suggested that mobile phones emit small electrical currents and sparks when powered on, making calls, or sending texts.
While these currents are usually harmless, however, in the presence of gas fumes, even a minor spark can have catastrophic consequences.
To minimize the risk of a gas explosion in the kitchen, it is advisable to limit the use of mobile phones near gas stoves.
People should avoid making calls, texting, or even having their phones within close proximity to the cooker or cylinders when gas is in use.
Routine checks for gas leaks are equally essential.
Ensuring that gas fittings and appliances are well-maintained can prevent leaks from occurring.
Distractions caused by phone use while cooking should not be overlooked either.
Beyond the risk of gas-related accidents, a phone can divert ones attention, leading to burns, fires, or deaths.
Although mobile phones are relatively indispensable in modern life, their use in kitchens filled with flammable substances must be managed carefully.
As dependence on gas appliances grows, being aware of the associated dangers and taking preventive measures can help maintain kitchen safety.
By recognizing the risks and adhering to safety guidelines, people can protect their homes and loved ones from preventable accidents.
Finally, next time people try to reach for their phones while in the kitchen, they should think twice, as aborting such mission might just save their lives and properties.
