President Bola Tinubu has appointed a former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Ambassador Rafiu Adejare Bello, as the new Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University.
Amb. Bello’s appointment as new substantive Pro Chancellor takes effect from March 10th, 2026.
He replaces Late Professor Siyan Oyeweso who died on December 2, 2025 after a brief illness.
Born on August 23, 1961, Bello holds a degree in Law from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Bello was Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mexico with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama from 2021 to 2024.
Before his ambassadorial appointment, Bello held several political positions including Member (1999-2003) and Speaker (2003-2011) of the Osun State House of Assembly.
