Airtel Suspends Airtime, Data Credit Services in Nigeria

Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, which previously enabled eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.

Newsmen reports that the telecom operator said the decision forms part of ongoing operational adjustments in response to evolving regulatory requirements in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

In a statement issued on Friday (today), the Director, Corporate Communications and CSR, Airtel Nigeria, Femi Adeniran, said the move was necessary to ensure compliance with current industry expectations.

He explained that the suspension aligns with broader efforts to meet regulatory and operational standards governing telecom services in the country.

Despite the suspension of the credit facility, Airtel Nigeria assured customers that regular services would remain unaffected.

The company noted that subscribers would continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to standard airtime and data purchases through existing channels.

It added that the temporary pause is not expected to impact network performance or overall service delivery nationwide.

Commenting on the development, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the decision as both necessary and responsible.

He said, “This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”

The company assured subscribers that further information regarding the status of the suspended service would be communicated in due course.

The development comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based services within Nigeria’s telecom sector.
