Laylatul Qadr: The Night of Power During Ramadan

TODAY’S VIEWPOINT IS ON LAYLATUL QADR: THE NIGHT OF POWER DURING RAMADAN. IT IS WRITTEN BY DR. KAZEEM OLALEKAN, CHIEF IMAM, MUSLIM COMMUNITY OF OSUN STATE UNIVERSITY, EJIGBO CAMPUS. 

Laylatul Qadr, known as the night of power or the night of decree, holds a sacred place in the Islamic calendar. 

It commemorates the pivotal moment when the first verses of the holy Quran were revealed to prophet Muhammad by angel Jibril. 

Falling within the last 10 nights of Ramadan, the occasion carries immense spiritual significance. 

Though the exact date remains a mystery, Muslim faithful are encouraged to seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the final ten days of Ramadan. 

Aligning with the prophet Muhammad’s example, the 27th night is often regarded as particularly auspicious.

The Quranic verses in Surah Al-Qadr (97:1-5) underscore the profound importance of the night as it emphasizes its superiority over a thousand months. 

A night which highlights the descent of angels and divine blessings upon the earth, is also marked by tranquillity, spirituality, and divine intervention, offering believers an unparalleled opportunity for worship and supplication.

For Muslims, Laylatul Qadr holds profound spiritual significance, serving as a reminder of the divine revelation of the Quran and the boundless rewards bestowed upon those who dedicate themselves to acts of worship and righteousness. 

Performing voluntary prayers, giving charity, and seeking forgiveness are among the acts that garner immense rewards, particularly when performed with sincerity and devotion on this blessed night.

Moreover, Laylatul Qadr serves as a catalyst for spiritual reflection and repentance, prompting believers to introspect, seek forgiveness for their transgressions, and strive for self-improvement.

 it is also a time for heartfelt repentance and a renewed commitment to righteousness, as encapsulated in Prophet Muhammad’s supplication for forgiveness and mercy.

Acts of charity and kindness towards others are also emphasized during Laylatul Qadr, reflecting the values of compassion, generosity, and humility inherent in Islam. 

From giving charity to practicing good manners and upholding ethical conduct, believers are encouraged to embody the teachings of Islam in their interactions with others.

In essence, Laylatul Qadr serves as a beacon of spiritual enlightenment and divine grace, inviting believers to draw closer to Allah, seek forgiveness, and strive for righteousness.

In conclusion, it is a time of reflection, gratitude, and devotion, offering Muslims an opportunity to deepen their faith and cultivate a closer connection with the divine.
