Beans Remain Key to Nigerian Diet – Food Policy Analyst

A Food Policy Analyst, Mr Ajibola Oladipo says Beans remain one of the most important staples in Nigerian diet due to its high nutritional values.

Speaking with Pensioners FM in commemoration of National Beans Day celebrated every 6th of January, Mr Oladipo, said beans play a critical role in meeting the protein needs of Nigerians.

Mr Oladipo explained that beans contain about 55 per cent carbohydrates and between 22 and 25 per cent protein, while being low in fat, with just one to two per cent fat content.

He noted that beans also provide dietary fiber, iron and other essential minerals that support strength and healthy growth.

“From a policy perspective, he said beans contribute significantly to improving protein intake among the population, especially for low-income households.”- Mr Oladipo

Speaking on the price of bean, some residents of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, noted that the price of beans has reduced compared to the previous year, making it more affordable for many households.

They also described beans as a crucial food that contributes significantly to the body’s nutritional needs.
