Food Insecurity: Expert Advises Govt. to Empower Agricultural Research Institutes

An Environmental Expert, Mr Gboyega Olorunfemi has urged the government to empower national agricultural research and development institutes to increase farm products across the country.

Mr Olorunfemi made this known while featuring on Pensioners’ FM current affair programme, “Trending” in commemoration of World Food Day themed, ‘Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave no One Behind’.

He also advised the government to provide farming tools such as tractors and seedlings for farmers for free or at subsidised prices in enhancing food production.

Speaking further, Mr Olorunfemi, who is also a climate change consultant, urged the National Council on Climate Change, NCCC to always sensitise farmers on the effects of climatic change on farming and how it could be manage, to reduce damages on farm produce.

Mr Olorunfemi equally called on the government to create synergy between agricultural institutes such as The National Horticultural Research Institute, NIHORT, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, IITA and Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, CRIN for the development of the agriculture sector.

He also advised the people to go into farming business as a way of fighting food insecurity.
