A Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Benjamin Akande (Retired) says insecurity is still prevalent in the country, due to inadequate personnel.

CSP Akande, who made this known while featuring on Pensioners FM weekly Current Affairs Programme, “Searchlight”, noted that the country needs about two hundred thousand personnel to tackle the level of insecurity and criminality on ground.

According to the retired CSP, only 10,000 policemen are recruited yearly which is not adequate for the 36 states in the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

CSP Akande said in accordance with the United Nations standard, there should be one police officer to four hundred people compared to Nigeria which has one police officer to two thousand people.

He also lamented insufficient equipment and poor welfare has some of the major challenges in the police force.

CSP Akande called on the federal government to invest into the police force through training, retraining and increasing the number of personnel recruited yearly across the country.
