A Retired Assistant Director of Forestry, Oyo state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Julius Ishabiyi, has called on the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to take urgent action against the growing menace of deforestation to mitigate challenges of climate change in the state.
Mr. Ishabiyi in an interview with Pensioners FM Correspondent emphasised the dire consequences of unchecked deforestation, warning that it could lead to environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity and adverse climatic conditions.
According to the one time consultant on horticulture at the University of Lagos, Oyo State, once known for its lush green landscapes and rich forestry resources, is witnessing alarming levels of tree falling for urban development, agriculture and logging activities.
Mr Ishabiyi pointed out that if immediate measures are not implemented, the state could face serious ecological crises such as soil erosion, desertification and decline in water resources.
He also called for increased public awareness strategies to educate state’s communities on the importance of preserving forests for future generations.
