Association of Medical Social Workers of Nigeria, AMSWON, wants the federal government to commence the implementation of the social work council bill, signed into law in 2022 by former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
The National President of the Association, Dr Anthony Ogedengbe made this known at a lecture organized by the Oyo state wing of the association in commemoration of Social Work Day held at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.
Dr Ogedengbe noted that social work work in Nigeria needed urgent attention to meet with International best practices.
In a lecture entitled “strengthening inter-generational solidarity for enduring wellbeing”, which is also the theme for this year’s celebration, guest lecturer from the Department of Social Work, University of Ibadan, Dr Abimbola Afolabi emphasized the need for more recognition of social workers in the society due to their pivotal role to the development of any nation.
Dr Afolabi noted that social work was charity-driven, hence it should be encouraged.
Contributing, Chairman of AMSWON in Oyo state, Dr Adeleke Ogunyemi appealed to Medical Doctors to be more patient when dealing with cases brought before them by social workers.
