ANUOLUWAPO FASOYIN OF OUR NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT WRITES ON SUPER EAGLES’ CHANCES AT THE ONGOING AFCON IN CÔTE D’IVOIRE

The 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) began on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in Cote d’Ivoire.

Three times winners, the super eagles of Nigeria found themselves at the center of attention, after playing a one-one draw against Equatorial Guinea in their first group a match on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

With Nigeria’s AFCON history featuring three triumphant moments in 1980, 1994, and 2013, expectations run high for the super eagles to once again claim the continental glory.

The team, driven by the ‘let’s do it again’ battle cry, seeks to replicate the unity and resilience displayed in 2013 under late coach Stephen Keshi, combining experienced players with home grown talents.

Coach Jose Peseiro, has been tasked with leading the squad to victory.

Also, the Nigeria football federation, NFF’s engagement of former internationals and influencers to campaign off the field for the super eagles’ fourth title underscores the national commitment to victory.

However, concerns linger, notably the team’s recent lacklustre performances, drawing against perceived minnows in the world cup qualifiers. The absence of reliable goalkeepers, akin to past stalwarts like Vincent Enyeama and Peter Rufai, raises alarms.

Peseiro’s tactical acumen also faces scrutiny, especially given the mandate to reach at least the semi-final stage for job security.

Injuries have side lined key players like Bayer Leverkusen, striker victor Boniface, Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi  and Real Sociedad forward, Sadiq Umar necessitating replacements and adding to the challenges.

Despite these hurdles, the super eagles are set to face hosts, Ivory Coast and Guinea Bissau in the remaining matches in group a.

The battle cry ‘let’s do it again’ echoes through the air, echoing the collective aspirations of a nation with a rich AFCON history.

Whether the super eagles will fly to lift the trophy for the fourth time, secure familiar first runners up position, or face an early exit remains to be seen.

As the 2023 AFCON is ongoing, the super eagles’ journey promises excitement, challenges, and the potential for Nigerian football to once again make its mark on the continental stage.
