TACKLING CHALLENGES CONFRONTING PEOPLE LIVING WITH DISABILITIES IN NIGERIA IS THE FOCUS OF TODAY’S VIEWPOINT. IT IS WRITTEN BY EMMANUEL DADA, A YOUTH CORPS MEMBER IN THE NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT.
People living with disabilities in Nigeria face numerous challenges that not only stem from their physical conditions but also from societal attitudes, systemic neglect, and the absence of robust support structures.
Over the years, people living with disabilities often find themselves marginalized, struggling to gain the same opportunities and rights afforded to others.
These challenges are multifaceted, spanning through social, economic, physical, and psychological factors.
One of the most profound barriers for people living with disabilities in Nigeria is the societal stigma and discrimination that they face on a daily basis.
Disabilities are often misunderstood and viewed through a lens of pity or fear, rather than acceptance.
In some Nigerian communities, disabilities are perceived as a curse or punishment, a view that not only isolates individuals but also prevents them from participating fully in social activities.
This translates into exclusion from social events, educational opportunities, and employment, creating an environment where people living with disabilities are made to feel inferior or less valuable.
Unemployment rates among people living with disabilities are alarmingly high, with many qualified individuals being overlooked for jobs simply because of their disabilities.
The absence of assistive technologies and devices further complicates their abilities to secure employment.
Also, many public and private infrastructure in Nigeria lack essential features such as ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms.
This inaccessibility not only limits mobility but also causes social exclusion for people living with disabilities.
Physical accessibility remains a major challenge for people living with disabilities in Nigeria.
Most public buildings, transportation systems, and even private structures lack the necessary accommodations to make them accessible to people with mobility impairments.
Public transportation options are limited for people living with disabilities, and those available are rarely equipped to accommodate wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
Despite legislative efforts aimed at promoting inclusivity, such as the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018, significant barriers persist that hinder the full participation of PLWDs in society.
A change in societal perceptions about disabilities should be prioritized, and every member of the society should be accepted no matter their state and disabilities.
The plight of persons living with disabilities in Nigeria is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention from all sectors of society.
By addressing the stigma, improving accessibility, enhancing employment opportunities, and enforcing existing laws effectively, Nigeria can move towards a more inclusive society where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive regardless of their abilities.
