ENSURING A CREDIBLE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION IN OYO STATE IS THE FOCUS OF TODAY’S VIEWPOINT. IT IS WRITTEN BY HONOURABLE FEMI ADEBISI, A MEDIA CONSULTANT 

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, residents of Oyo state will once again exercise their democratic rights as they head to the polls for the local government election.

Following the last election held in May, 2021, this Saturday’s election presents an opportunity for voters to actively participate in shaping the future of their local councils.

Furthermore, the importance of voter turnout cannot be overstated as a vibrant democracy thrives on the active participation of its citizens, and every vote cast is a voice heard in the corridors of power. 

It is imperative for eligible voters to exercise their franchise and contribute to the democratic process by casting informed ballots that reflect their values and aspirations for their localities.

central to the integrity of the electoral process is the imperative of free and fair elections. 

Transparent electoral practices, impartial oversight, and adherence to electoral laws are essential to ensure that the will of the people is accurately reflected in the outcome of this Saturday’s local polls. Oyo state independent electoral commission, OYSIEC must uphold the principles of fairness and impartiality. 

Furthermore, political parties and candidates must refrain from engaging in vote-buying, coercion, or any form of electoral malpractice.

moreover, it is incumbent upon the electorate to remain vigilant and actively combat attempts to undermine the integrity of the electoral process by  reporting irregularities, promoting transparency, and holding elected officials accountable, citizens can safeguard the democratic ideals upon which their society is built.

As local government election holds in Oyo state, one of the pivotal issues at stake in local government administration in Nigeria is a call for full autonomy for local governments. 

With a full autonomy, local authorities can better address the unique needs and priorities of their communities, leading to more effective governance and improved service delivery.

As Oyo state prepares for the local government election on April 27, 2024, Nigerians must reaffirm their commitment to democracy, civic responsibility, and the pursuit of a better future for all during elections. 

Nigerians, regardless of political differences, should  unite to ensure that electoral exercises are conducted with integrity, transparency, and respect for the will of the people.

Together, we can uphold the principles of democracy and lay the foundation for a more prosperous and inclusive society.

  1. Thanks for this write-up. The ideal of a democratic society is encapsulated the people’s freedom to choose their elected representatives. But as I write this on the morning after the election day, those who snatched the ballot box at W.3, Irewole/ Pegba in broad daylight, (the polling station where I voted), technically disenfranchised the voters and made a mockery of their belief in the voting exercise.
