Secretary, Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, Oyo State Council, Comrade Olusegun Abatan has advised the leadership of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, in the state, to seek redress in court on the increment of allocation sharing formula.
Comrade Abatan gave the advice while featuring on a monitored radio programme in Ibadan.
According to Comrade Abatan, the current allocation sharing formula cannot successfully run the activities of all local government areas in the state.
He said NULGE should also fight for the release of revenue generating responsibilities constitutionally due it, currently being run by the state government.
While acknowledging NUP support for local government autonomy, the NUP scribe noted that, whatever arrangement concerning the financial autonomy, prompt payment of teachers’ salaries and pension must be factored in.
Also speaking on the programme, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Oyo State Council, Comrade Oladimeji Raji, disclosed that teachers
were faring well under the Joint Allocation Account, with prompt payment of salaries, promotions as and when due and reduction in the number of out of school children.
Comrade Raji urged NULGE to, however, prioritise the education sector in its decision making concerning Local government financial autonomy.
Responding, NULGE President, Oyo State Wing, Comrade Ayobami Adeogun assured all parties concerned that the leadership of local governments in the country are meeting to discuss administrative modalities for the smooth running of LGAs in view of the judgment on financial autonomy.
