Media professionals in Oyo State need to leverage on digital data journalism to set agenda for effective storytelling, transparency and accountability in the education sector of the state.
A media Professional, Mr. Micheal Olatubosun made the call at the close of a two-day capacity-building workshop for media personnel on transparency and accountability in education.
The event was organized by Education as a Vaccine Initiative in collaboration with Malala Fund Champions Nigeria and other partners, in Ibadan.
Mr. Olatubosun highlighted the growing accessibility to data, noting that it offers media professionals an unprecedented opportunity to uncover new stories, delve into complex issues, and provide critical context in their coverage and reportage of the education sector.
He also emphasised on the importance of collaboration with local civil society organizations and education advocacy groups like Education as a Vaccine, to ensure data are effectively utilized in education reportage in Oyo State
On her part, Programme Officer at Education as a Vaccine Initiative in Kaduna, Ms. Mercy Abalaku, also urged media professionals to contribute to the efforts at making the education sector in Oyo State more transparent and accountable, particularly on Gender Specific Issues in the sector.
In an interview, two of the participants who commended the organisers for the insightful sessions, promised to apply the knowledge gained towards ensuring transparency and accountability in the state’s education sector.
The Two-Day capacity building workshop, themed “Empowering the Media, Enhancing Transparency,” featured notable media professionals, including Dr. Babatunde Tiamiyu, General Manager of Pensioners FM.
