Need to Strengthen Security Measures at Oyo State Secretariat

IN TODAY’S VIEWPOINT, AANUOLUWAPO FASOYIN OF OUR NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT WRITES ON THE NEED TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY MEASURES AT OYO STATE SECRETARIAT.

The Oyo State Secretariat, situated in the heart of Ibadan, stands as a pivotal administrative complex hosting various government ministries, agencies, and parastatals.

While it holds historical significance, some recent unpleasant developments have underscored the need for heightened security, particularly in the realm of vehicle checks, to ensure the safety and integrity of the vital administrative center.

Constructed during Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s era, the secretariat has evolved into a multifaceted space accommodating not only government offices but also branches of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), banks, business centers, canteens, and worship centers.

Unfortunately, the central hub has also become a gathering place for destitutes and hoodlums seeking financial assistance.

Despite commendable security measures implemented by Governor Seyi Makinde, security challenges persist within the secretariat, with incidents of missing items, including cars and motorbikes.

This therefore called for urgent need to institute comprehensive vehicle checks at all entrances of the secretariat.

According to observation, the current lax approach allows hundreds of vehicles to enter and exit without undergoing necessary inspections, posing risks to the safety and security of individuals and property within the complex.

Addressing these concerns will require a multifaceted approach.

Firstly, implementing thorough checks to verify the ownership of vehicles and motorbikes entering or leaving the secretariat is imperative. This measure will enhance security and reduce the likelihood of theft incidents.

Additionally, introducing a tally system to meticulously record the movement of vehicles can streamline operations and provide a valuable tool for security personnel to monitor and manage traffic effectively.

Moreover, exploring modern identification approaches ensures an efficient and technologically advanced system and contribute to a more secure and seamless process.

Stakeholders, including government authorities and security operatives, must take proactive measures to safeguard the secretariat.

Waiting for high-profile personalities or their relatives to report missing items before concrete steps are taken should not be the case.

Therefore, Stakeholders should collaborate to create a robust security infrastructure that actively deters criminal activities and promotes a secure environment for all occupants.

In conclusion, prioritizing security, including comprehensive vehicle checks at the entrances of the Oyo State Secretariat will not only fortifies security measures but also protects valuable assets.
