The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, has called for the establishment of Local Emergency Management Committees, LEMC, in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas to enhance disaster management and preparedness.
The Southwest Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr. Kadiri Olanrewaju, made the call in an interview with Pensioners FM.
According to Mr. Olanrewaju, the creation of LEMCs would provide structured and localised approach in handling emergencies, and to ensure that communities were better equipped to respond to natural and man-made disasters.
Mr. Olanrewaju also noted that the role of the committees would not only be reactive, in terms of providing immediate relief after a disaster, but also proactive, by facilitating risk assessments, disaster preparedness, and community education.
