The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP Southwest zone, has called on the government to adjust minimum wage and pension to a living wage and pension.
The Union made the call in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, at the union’s meeting in Ogun State.
According to the union, this became extremely important because the current minimum wage of 70,000 naira and minimum pension of 25,000 naira can no longer meet the economic situation of the country.
The union, therefore, appealed to Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC, to start the process of renegotiating a living wage and living pension this year, for workers and retirees across the country.
Comrade Abatan, who is also the Secretary, Oyo NUP, reaffirmed Governor Seyi Makinde’s promise of 10,000 naira palliative for the next 3 months, starting this month, to relief workers and pensioners in the state of the hardship aggravated by US-lsreal strikes in Iran.
Comrade Abatan noted that some governors in southwest still owe members gratuities for 15 years, dating back to 2011.
The NUP scribe further stated that the union will celebrate governors in southwest prioritising members’ welfare, including Governor Seyi Makinde and Ondo State governor Lucky Ayedatiwa, while those owing members would be taken to court.
The union urged members who are yet to get their Voter cards to do so to make them eligible to vote out governors not prioritising their welfare and vote in those with good scorecards in 2027.
Kudos to Jagaban, Comrade Olusegun Abatan. Oga tia ni yen. Isimi dun leyin ise,bi ijoba ba Dara bii ti Governor Seyi Abiodun Makinde
