United Nations International Children Emergency Fund, UNICEF says it has distributed Human Papilloma Virus, HPV vaccines to some states in the country.
UNICEF Social and Behaviour Change Specialist, Lagos Field Office, Mrs Aderonke Akinola-Akinwole made this known in an interview with Pensioners FM correspondent.
Mrs Akinola-Akinwole said the vaccines, aimed at preventing cervical cancer were meant for girls between ages 9-14 and urged parents to ensure their daughters get vaccinated against the HPV virus.
She said,” Human Papilloma Virus, HPV vaccine is a vaccine tailored towards girls and women to prevent cervical cancer. The vaccine in Nigeria has been introduced in some states, but is going to be introduced in other parts of Nigeria by May, 2024, with Oyo State included.”
Mrs Akinola-Akinwole noted that it poses no danger to the girl child, contrary to some rumours making the rounds.
Speaking further, the UNICEF Social and Behaviour Change Specialist, appreciated Pensioners’ FM for creating a platform to advocate for the rights of women and children.
“It is a noble course, a gaint strides for us to have people who have retired after meritoriously service to humanity to come together to give back to the society through the medium of radio, it is something that is applaudable.”
Mrs Akinola-Akinwole added that UNICEF has greatly benefited from the station, through airing of programmes associated with the organisation.
