Drug abuse among youths has been a growing concern that threatens the well-being and future prospects of societies worldwide. 

According to world health organization, who, drug and substance abuse encompass the harmful utilization of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs, posing significant risks to physical, social, and emotional health.

The alarming prevalence of drug addiction has cast a dark shadow over communities, robbing youths of their potential, fostering mental health disorders, and even leading to fatalities and addiction.

Nigeria, despite its rich cultural tapestry and vibrant youth population, grapples with the scourge of drug abuse, escalating into a pressing public health crisis.

A recent report from 2021 revealed staggering statistics, indicating a prevalence of drug abuse ranging from 20% to 40% among students and youths. 

Cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, heroin, diazepam, codeine, cough syrup, and tramadol stand out as commonly abused substances. 

They are sourced from various outlets such as pharmacies, open drug markets, drug hawkers, peers, and pushers.

The motives behind drug abuse vary and they include encompassing desires to enhance physical performance, alleviate stress, and seek pleasure. 

The repercussions are dire, manifesting in drug dependence, risky sexual behaviour, unplanned pregnancies, and compromised mental health.

Moreover, drug abuse impairs driving skills, posing imminent dangers to drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike. 

Despite existing drug laws and policies spearheaded by government agencies like the national drug law enforcement agency (NDLEA), national agency for food and drug administration and control (NAFDAC), and the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), epidemiological studies underscore the persistent prevalence of drug abuse.

Tackling drug addiction among youths demands a multifaceted approach.

First and foremost, raising awareness about the perils of drug use and addiction, particularly targeting the youth demographic, emerges as a crucial intervention.

Also, ensuring access to comprehensive treatment and support services for individuals grappling with addiction is paramount. 

Additionally, fostering avenues for positive and constructive youth engagement can serve as a preventive measure, diverting vulnerable individuals from the path of drug dependency.

However, addressing the root causes of drug addiction, including poverty and mental health challenges, necessitates systemic changes and holistic interventions.

By mobilizing collective efforts, stakeholders can work towards a future where youths are empowered, resilient, and free from the grip of substance abuse, thereby safeguarding their well-being and nurturing thriving communities.
