Analysts Enjoin FG to Use Extant Laws to Curb Fake News

By Michael Adeyemo

Two Public Affairs Analysts have enjoined the federal government to use extant laws in place to curb the menace of fake news on social media platforms.

The Analysts, Mr Jide Ojo, and Mr Olufemi Omolade made this known while speaking on this year’s Media and Information Literacy week, on Pensioners’ FM weekly Current Affairs Programme “Trending “.

Speaking on this year’s theme “Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces: A Collective Global Agenda,” Mr Ojo noted that even though the benefits of the new media outweigh its disadvantages, yet it must be regulated.

Mr Ojo also called for responsible journalism on the part of social media handlers so as to promote contents that enable Nigerians to make informed decisions.

On his part, Mr Omolade noted that there is a need for Nigeria to key into various innovations in the digital space to enhance media literacy.

Mr Omolade also noted that the government should encourage the use of social media, especially at the grassroots by making it cheaper and accessible for all.
