The Late Veteran Nigerian actress Elizabeth Evoeme, famously known as Ovularia from the popular 80s TV show ‘The New Masquerade’, was born on 1st of December, 1942, in Calabar, Cross River State to a sea worker father.
Evoeme’s career spanned from 1982 to 1993, preceding the rise of Nollywood.
Elizabeth Evoeme rose to national fame for her role as Ovularia on the TV show. She portrayed the devoted wife of Chief Zebrudaya Nwogbo, played by Chika Okpala, in the TV drama.
Her role in ‘The New Masquerade’ not only entertained, but also reflected societal system, earning her a place in the hearts of many.
Her character, a petty trader with a blend of confidence and obedience, made her to be loved by audiences across Nigeria.
Despite her fame as Ovularia, Evoeme once admitted to never knowing the meaning behind the stage name. Nevertheless, her embodiment of the character left an indelible mark on viewers, solidifying her status as an icon in Nigerian TV folklore.
In 2020, Elizabeth Evoeme received recognition for her invaluable contributions to the entertainment industry.
Ovularia’s passing on 5th of May, in Port Harcourt, at the age of 81, followed earlier false rumors in November 2019, where social media buzzed with unfounded reports of her demise which she promptly dispelled, expressing shock at the false rumour.
Her colleague, Chika Okpala, also confirmed her well-being, highlighting her continued presence in the entertainment realm.
Following her death, veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko described the late actress as a disciplined woman who had contributed immensely to the growth of the entertainment industry.
Also, veteran Nollywood actor, Adebayo Salami, described her death as shocking.
