Nigeria Union of Pensioners, South-West zone has said that any move to increase the salaries of political officeholders would force the organised labour to demand salary and pension increment.
The union’s Public Relations Officer, Comrade Olusegun Abatan made this known in an interview with newsmen.
Comrade Abatan, who is also the Oyo state secretary of the union, cautioned against unilateral decisions during the salary adjustments for political officeholders.
He advised labour unions to evaluate the economic realities of retirees and workers with a view to negotiate living wages across board.
Comrade Abatan maintained that pensioners command strong electoral influence and politicians who neglect pensioners’ welfare may lose their support in the 2027 elections.
The Oyo NUP scribe commended Governor Seyi Makinde for raising the minimum pension to ₦25,000 and gradually clearing gratuity arrears from as far back as 2014.
