Ogun State Government will begin a statewide screening for diabetes and hypertension, targeting over 350,000 residents to help them understand their health status and prevent sudden deaths from avoidable non-communicable diseases.
State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, announced the launch of “Project 10 Million – Know Your Number, Control Your Number” during a briefing in Abeokuta.
She highlighted that this initiative is part of a national health promotion campaign led by the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum.
According to Dr. Coker, the one-week program would kick off today and aims to address the rising rates of non-communicable diseases, especially hypertension and diabetes, across the country.
She emphasized that the estimated death risk from both conditions for individuals between the ages of 30 and 70 is 17%.
Dr. Coker described diabetes and hypertension as major health issues in Nigeria that account for about 27% of all yearly deaths.
